WILLIE COBURN

Left back in Willie Ormond's great St Johnstone team of the late 60's and early 70's, William Simpson Coburn died in hospital in Edinburgh on 5th December 2015, aged 74.

Willie Coburn is on the far left of the back row of this St Johnstone team group of 1970/71

Signed by Bobby Brown from Crieff Earngrove juniors in September 1962, the compact, tenacious full back spent much of his first two seasons at Muirton Park in the reserves, but became a first team fixture in 1964/65.

Saints were usually to be found in the bottom half of the First Division at that time, but they rose to 6th in 1968/69, and the following season they progressed to the League Cup Final, where they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Celtic.

In 1970/71, they finished third, and qualified for the Fairs Cup.  Coburn played in all six European ties, including the victory over a star-studded Hamburg side.   Despite playing in all but 8 of the first team games in 1971/72, Coburn was freed at the end of the season, and he had his first taste of lower division football with Forfar Athletic.   He finished his football career with 15 games for Cowdenbeath in 1973/74.

He played 324 times for St Johnstone in competitive first team games, and returned to work for the club in recent years as a part-time caretaker of the all-weather pitch facility.

His former team-mate Benny Rooney was interviewed by the Courier (7th December) and paid tribute to his colleague.   "Willie was part of a team which picked itself, with John Lambie at right back and him on the left.   He was up against world class wingers in Jimmy Johnstone and Willie Henderson and they never had it easy.   He was able to handle them.

"Willie treated every opponent the same.  His greatest strength was his reliability.  He just did his job week in, week out."
